The Olympic Games are considered the world’s foremost sporting competition. Participating in these games are competitors from over two-hundred nations. The Olympics have grown so much as an event that nearly every nation is now represented, providing the opportunity for practically unknown athletes to gain international fame.
Of course, we all know that the modern Olympic Games are inspired by the Ancient Olympic Games. But did you know that they were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th through 4th centuries BC? Wow! That is a long time ago. The ancient Olympic Games included events like wrestling, chariot racing, running, javelin throwing, and metal frisbee throwing.
Surprisingly some of those same events are just as popular today as they were then, like chariot racing!
Just kidding. Could you imagine Michael Phelps riding around in a chariot? I don’t know, he would probably still win the gold medal.
The Games are much different now. Some events have evolved, and some events are brand new. What the Storytellers would like to know is — what has been your favorite event in the Olympic Games so far this year? Have you been watching Phelps? How about those gymnasts?
